Unexpected Picnic

2011.02.13
Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

Walking to foreshore via Leichhardt Street.  A family was there for a picnic.  Food was just being served. A misty rain, not unpleasant, was softly in the air.  I was thinking about how to invite myself to join the food queue, tongue-in-cheek, when I see Imran from down the street and turns out his family and friends are having a Glebe picnic.  Have some food he says!  I stay for about an hour.  Great food and interesting conversation.  I met Abdul, an accountant for Radison and Saad who is working on PhD at UTS in Civil Engineering.

A survey of issues and approaches to remote laboratory adoption

REV2011 / March 2011

INTRODUCTION

With the increased promulgation of remote laboratory initiatives around the world, questions regarding adoption of remote laboratories are naturally coming of interest. In particular, remote laboratories intended to support teaching and learning are being constructed with presumption of use, yet many educational remote laboratories are underutilized.

Among other things , remote laboratories for teaching and learning represent a technological innovation, providing both opportunities and challenges to those who might wish to employ them in support of the teaching enterprise.

There are those who construct remote labs. There are those who use remote labs. In both cases, constructor and user, it would be beneficial to understand those mechanisms, imperatives, and incentives that drive the adoption of these technological creations. For those that construct remote labs, institutions, an understanding of adoption drivers should make it possible to improve the desirability of the remote labs that they construct. For those that use remote labs, teachers (and their students), an understanding of adoption drivers should make it possible to make appropriate choices as to whether a given remote lab is suitable for use in delivery of some laboratory based learning curriculum.

Whereas specific questions surrounding the matter of remote laboratory adoption for teaching and learning are still new and largely unfielded; questions regarding the general matter of technology adoption are long studied in the various disciplines which consider information systems and computer science. Likewise, though with a lineage not so long, are the investigations which consider adoption of educational technology. Technology adoption being the overarching topic of research; with educational technology adoption being a subset; and remote lab adoption being a yet further refinement.

For those interested in remote laboratory adoption, it seems a worthwhile exercise to see what can be learned, borrowed, and applied from the research which comes from general technology adoption and also from the more specific research of educational technology adoption. With lessons obtained from work that has gone before, a more clear conceptualization of the problems to be associated with remote lab adoption can be had and a fruitful research program articulated.

NOTES:

  • We are interested in decisions of individuals; not organizational decisions
  • We are interested in teachers; not students; not administrators; not support personnel.
  • We are interested in teaching and learning; not research; not commerce.
  • We are interested in stated choices; not revealed choice.

    SECTION

Regarding the general matter of technology adoption.

    SECTION

Regarding the more specific matter of educational technology adoption.

    SECTION

Regarding the very specific concerns of remote laboratory adoption.

    CONCLUSION

We have learned this and that from general technology adoption; and this and that from educational technology adoption. With this and that and this and that in mind . . . the following recommendations can be made and the following research direction can be articulated . . .

Technology Adoption

Technology adoption is a long studied topic in the world of information and computer science.  I knew there would also be much literature on technology adoption in education.  Just had a first peek and there is  LOT of educational technology adoption stuff. Yikes.

Some of what ha gone before is going to be relevant to remote laboratory adoption.  what will distinguish RL adoption from any other sort of technological innovation intended to support teaching and learning? Does is matter that it is engineering education?  Does it matter that it is laboratory based?  Hmmm.
