Remote Labs: paradigm shift? or just new medium?

So dbl was suggesting that remote labs represented a paradigm shift.  I had myself realized that using a remote lab for lab work did not necessarily have to mimic the proximate experience but i had not thought of things like digital overlays which David used as example as new paradigm.  My thinking on paradigm, however, is that it replaces old paradigm.  Heliocentric replaces earth centric.  Remote labs do NOT replace proximate labs.  They augment/supplement.  A new medium like tv new medium from radio.  Radio has not been replaced.  So remote lab is new medium, not new paradigm.  But new medium is significant.

There are though there are those who suggest this is what remote labs should strive to do.  I am recalling story of flutist Paul Horn who at one  point set up shop in the Taj Majhal.  Story i recall is that Paul Horn spent many many hours with his flute trying to digitize the sound and have the digital output sound like a . . . . flute.  At first, i thought how odd to invest such effort into producing a sound he could already make.  Since then i have an appreciation for what he was trying to do – which was permit anyone to output sound of a flute.  Reason i thinking about this in relation to remote lab replicating proximate lab experience is that it does seem reasonable to ask that we can preserve fidelity in the new medium.  Also reminds me of Picasso winning all Europe painting contest as a teen.  He said – i can do what you can do – now what else can be done.

Paul Horn was trying to replicate a present output (acoustic flute) into a new medium (midi sound).  Picasso took extant medium and extended could be done with it.   I see both aspects with remote labs.  Times when desirable to replicate with fidelity experience of proximate lab.  Remote labs is a new medium, however, and so there are other possibilities.  I am mixing my metaphors – as for Picasso – remote labs are in the medium of teaching – and so remote labs extends what can be done with teaching.

Assuming i keep going with this writing, there will eventually be a great number of entries regarding pedagogy. note to self: i need to read more Piaget and Dewey; need to learn more about constructivist thought.

Just now i am reading Wong, K. et al., 2007. Teaching experiences with a virtual network laboratory. ACM SIGCSE Bulletin, 39(1), 481. Available at: http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=1227504.1227473.

“… benefits to learning from reconciling inconsistencies between different representations and the need to view redundant data as a further verification of the observations.”

This struck me as being quite useful to keep in mind. There are different ways to view things and it is valuable to recognize that there can be myriad representations of the same phenomena.

This is also good:

“Misunderstandings can be quickly resolved if the student is given strategies for recognizing and resolving mistakes, thus increasing their confidence in solving
problems.”

I suppose I try and do this but i will try and be more explicit going forward.

Desirable but not always possible to have a one-to-one mapping of lecture to lab.

Not desirable to have the accidental to get in the way of the essential.
